Cultural Customs of the New Year

Published on January 18, 2018 by teammvr

Every culture has their own unique way to bring in the New Year, what may be bizarre to us is
an important feature to someone else. It is important to see how others live their lives and
compare it to how you live yours. Here are some customs and traditions in the cities of My
Vacations Rentals properties:

Buenos Aires, Argentina: Traditionally families will gather around and share a late meal
together on the night of New Year’s Eve. This ensures that everyone will be entering the New
Year with a full stomach and bring no hunger into the coming year. Once the clock strikes
midnight people will bring their suitcases and bags (as many as they can carry) and walk around
the neighborhood with them. This brings travel into the New Year and the more bags you carry
the more you will be able to travel. Another common tradition is eating beans at midnight, this
belief means that you will have job security in the New Year or will bring about a better
opportunity in your career.

Palm Springs/ New York, United States: To us (Americans) these traditions may seem blasé and
normal, but to the 7 billion other people on this planet, we may be considered weird watching a
lighted ball drop from a building at midnight (thanks New York Times). Or it is weird that we kiss
people the minute the ball hits the bottom, the belief that this kiss will bring love and blessings
into the New Year.

The point is, that even though 2018 just began, make it a resolution to understand someone
else’s culture. Make it a resolution to go and travel and see these cultures first hand! Major
Bonus: My Vacations Rentals has vacancies that would be a great start to this.
